Breeders

The Bergamasco Sheepdog Club of America (BSCA) was formed in 1996. It’s main goal is the protection and management of the breeding of Bergamascos sheepdogs (through high quality blood lines such as Dell Albera and Del Montevergine).
All of the breeders listed on this page meet the guidelines set forth by BSCA and are supported by the club. They have all signed our breeder’s code of ethics and are active and participate in the club (See Code of Ethics).
The guidelines are set to protect the purchaser in getting a true Bergamasco of quality, as well as protect our dogs in breeding them in a humane way offering an optimum emotional, and physical environment.
BSCA cannot insure health, quality and origins from dogs breeders who are not BSCA Approved Breeders. The concern is that unscrupulous breeders would use the name “Bergamasco Sheepdog” to benefit from the excellent reputation of the breed for their own purposes.

A note about breeding: The Bergamasco is a highly complex animal, both emotionally and physically. There is a great deal to learn about this breed before a person should consider the possibility of breeding. Some of this knowledge can be acquired through ownership of Bergamascos over a period of years with careful observation and attention; other matters include a basic knowledge of the various genetic factors that must be known and considered for successful breeding. Also, because most people acquiring a Bergmasco are doing so for the first time, they usually have a great many questions about this wonderful dog and its behavior, particularly over the first few years. And finally, as noted, the coat goes through several changes before reaching it final, mature stage. For these reasons, it is important for a breeder to be not only knowledgeable, but willing and able to assist new owners over the course of the dog's life with any questions they may have. Thus a Bergamasco breeder is not just a source of a puppy; rather, your breeder should be able to serve as your guide for many years as you come to know and understand this magnificent animal. As a result, this is not an appropriate breed for the occasional or "backyard" breeder.
